Back to School Math Review

So, after a school year like the one we just had, it’s hard to know how to prepare for back to school season. One thing that I think we can all agree on is that all of our kids will need to review last year’s standards. Whether we’re distance learning for part of the fall, back in the classroom, or doing a little of both, we will all need to be prepared to review the content from last year before diving into this year’s work!

Today, I have two different ways that you can use my Back to School Math PBL with your students!

3rd Grade Teachers: Use this PBL to Review all of the 2nd Grade CCSS for Math

This Math PBL walks students through a typical back to school season, and they must apply their math knowledge to complete each task. For example, students will apply money skills to shop for school supplies, time skills to create a daily schedule, measurement skills to design a classroom layout, etc. This is a great, real-world way for brand new 3rd graders to review all that they were taught in 2nd grade. It also gives you some insight into what your students may need to review even further. If you see some struggle on one part of the project with a specific group of kids, you’ll know that you need to review those standards again before teaching the new content in that domain.

Because all of the domains from 2nd grade are covered in this one project, it’s the only you’ll need to prep to review 2nd grade content at the beginning of the year. It’s a fun, engaging way to review, but is also super rigorous!

2nd Grade Teachers: Use this PBL in small groups as a pre-test

If you’re a 2nd grade teacher, you’re going to want to see what your students remember from first grade, but you’re also going to want to assess what they already know from 2nd grade. Because this project covers all of the 2nd grade standards, it’s a great thing to bring out in small groups the first week of math groups, and see what portions your students can complete independently. If you have some portions where you are really having to guide the students through it, you’ll know that you need to teach those standards more deeply. But, if everyone in your class takes off with the fractions portion, maybe you can condense those lessons when you get to them! With all of the review we will need to do this coming year, the more we can condense our content to leave space to fill the gaps, the better!
